How to tell if a "was" price is real
A big crossed-out price makes any offer look good. These checks take a couple of minutes and tell you whether the saving is real.
1. Look at the price history, not the RRP
An RRP is the price the manufacturer suggests, and many products rarely sell at it. What matters is what the item has actually cost recently. Free price-history tools and price comparison sites show this as a chart. If the "sale" price is the same as the usual price for the last few months, there is no real saving.
2. Compare the exact model number
Check the full model code, colour and pack size. Two products with the same name can be different versions, and comparing the wrong one makes a discount look bigger than it is. Our model numbers guide explains why.
3. Check the brand's own shop
Brands such as Vax, Shark, Russell Hobbs and Wahl run their own online shops and often have the deepest discounts during their own sales. If a retailer's "deal" is above the brand's current price, keep looking.
4. Add delivery before you compare
A lower price with a delivery charge can cost more than a slightly higher price with free delivery. Compare the total you will pay.
5. Read the offer terms
Codes often exclude some brands or need a minimum spend. Loyalty prices need the right card. Check the terms on the retailer's site before you rely on the saving.
